Who Should Attend

This field trip is targeted to exploration and development geologists, geophysicists, reservoir engineers and managers who are actively involved in exploration of Caribbean basins, and who are also interested in tectonics and sedimentation in forearc basins.

Objectives

The objective of the field trip is to study the Cenozoic sedimentary succession in the northern Sinú-San Jacinto fold belt, integrating new geological and geophysical data obtained mainly by Hocol and the ANH, including detailed studies and sampling of stratigraphic sections, stratigraphic and exploratory wells which have been recently characterized in terms of sedimentary environments and facies, biostratigraphy and petrography. The field trip will also include an integration of surface geology with subsurface data from wells and seismic, discussing the implications of the current geological knowledge of the area for petroleum systems and plays.

Course Content

The field trip will be done in two days and in relative chronological order, studying Eocene to Miocene units in the first day, and Miocene to Pleistocene units in the second day.

The first day in the morning, we will begin by studying outcrops of the different facies of the middle Eocene Chengue Group in the northern San Jacinto fold belt (Luruaco Anticlinorium), consisting of carbonates around the town of Arroyo de Piedra and conglomerates around the Pendales hamlet. Concerning petroleum systems, the sandy clastic facies of the Chengue Group are the only commercially productive reservoirs in the whole San Jacinto fold belt. In the first day we will also visit outcrops of Miocene to Pliocene units in the Juan de Acosta-Tubará depocenter or synclinorium, starting with Miocene units in the western flank of the depocenter (Porquero/Hibacharo Fm.) and continuing with Pliocene units towards the axis of the depocenter (Tubará Fm. and related units), which represent different deltaic lobes of the proto-Magdalena River.

In the second day, we will visit stratigraphic sections of Miocene to Pleistocene units along the coast, starting with good reservoir quality sandstones of the Porquero/Hibacharo Fm. outcropping in the northwestern Juan de Acosta-Tubará depocenter, close to the Santa Verónica hamlet. Then we will move west into the northernmost Sinú fold belt, where we will visit coastal cliffs of the Miocene Arjona Fm. in the Punta Canoa area, exhibiting very well-preserved, shallow-marine sedimentary structures. After a nice lunch in a Spanish restaurant, we will travel south to the Manzanillo area in the Cartagena depocenter, where we will study outcrops in the coast of the Plio-Pleistocene Popa-Bayunca Formations. If time allows, we could visit the El Totumo mud volcano and have a mud bath. Though the focus will be on the outcrops of the Cenozoic units, we will show an integration of surface geology with sub-surface data such as stratigraphic and exploratory wells and seismic data, to provide an overview of the integrated geological model of the northern Sinú-San Jacinto fold belt, including Cenozoic paleogeography and implications for petroleum systems.
